Common Causes of Motorcycle Accidents
Motorcycle riders face a host of potential dangers each day they take to the road. Their smaller vehicles and lack of overhead protection put motorcyclists at a far greater risk of sustaining serious injuries than those in passenger vehicles. Without a roof or doors, motorcyclists can be flung from their bike in a crash and may collide with the road or other dangerous objects. Sitting on 2 wheels also puts motorcycle riders in a precarious position because bikes are inherently less stable and can wobble or tip more easily than cars or trucks. Because motorcyclists are more likely to be injured in a crash, it is important for riders and drivers to exercise caution when on the road.
ROAD HAZARDS
Icy or debris-covered roads are dangerous for any vehicle. However, such conditions can be downright deadly for a motorcyclist. Bikers should always keep an eye out for road hazards, including dangerous weather conditions. It is safer for motorcyclists to avoid wet roads, which can cause hydroplaning, so motorcycles are best left in the garage on rainy or snowy days.
VEHICLE OR PART DEFECTS
If a part or mechanism in the motorcycle malfunctions or fails, it could cause a very serious crash. Whether the bike was designed poorly or assembled incorrectly, such mistakes could create unwanted bike glitches and might cause a crash.
LANE-SPLITTING
One of the greatest benefits of riding a motorcycle is the ability to weave in and out of traffic. This behavior, called lane-splitting, can be safe when executed correctly. However, if other motorists are not paying attention they might strike the motorcyclist, push him or her off the road, or cause a big accident. When late splitting, it is important for motorcyclists to drive defensively and watch out for other vehicles in order to avoid such incidents.
LEFT TURN ACCIDENTS
When making left turns, bigger vehicles often lose sight of smaller vehicles on the inside of the turn. Motorcycles can be especially hard to spot because of their compact size. These types of accidents can sideswipe motorcycles, causing a serious accident and potentially pushing the rider from his or her bike.
PARKED DRIVERS
Sometimes even parked drivers can pose a threat to motorcyclists. When parked drivers open their driver’s side doors without looking, it could create a hazard for oncoming traffic, especially motorcyclists. If a driver opens a door suddenly, an approaching motorcyclist can only swerve or risk colliding with the stationary door. In either of these situations, the biker’s safety is at risk.
While these are the most common causes of motorcycle accidents, it is important to know that crashes can happen anywhere, anytime, and for any reason. If you were injured in a motorcycle accident due to the carelessness, negligence, or fault of another, you may be eligible to seek compensation for the resulting damages.
