Just weeks after a fatal hit-and-run on Interstate 20 in McDuffie County, there has been a string of crashes throughout the CSRA on our interstates. 3 individuals have lost their lives as a result of some of these recent accidents.

I-20 Columbia County

  • Tuesday, September 29th – Two Fulton County Sheriff’s Office deputies died from injuries sustained in a collision with a  tractor-trailer. According to the sheriff’s office, Deputy Anthony White and Deputy Kenny Ingram were on duty in a patrol car en route to process an inmate transfer when the fatal accident occurred.

  • Tuesday, September 29th – 26-year-old Kaleb Smith, a tractor-trailer driver, was heading eastbound into slowing traffic when he hit the back of a Toyota RAV4. The tractor-trailer proceeded to drive down the right shoulder of the road and hit 7 more cars. The driver of the Toyota RAV4, Brenda Anderson of Grovetown, was pronounced dead on the scene. On September 30th, Smith was arrested for following too closely, driving too fast for conditions, and 2nd-degree vehicular homicide.

  • Thursday, October 1st – Two were injured in an auto accident that occurred on I-20 eastbound at the Grovetown exit. Authorities at the scene said an eastbound car was hit from behind by another vehicle, which sent it over the guardrail. Crews at the scene told News 12 that one person was suffering from a back and shoulder injury and the second person was suffering from minor injuries.

I-20 Richmond County

  • Wednesday, September 30th – Dispatchers reported multiple vehicles involved in this accident. Traffic was backed up near the Georgia and South Carolina state line, and officials closed the eastbound on-ramp on Riverwatch to I-20 as a result. No one was killed but some individuals involved reported minor injuries to the responding officers.

I-20 Aiken County

  • Monday, September 28th – Crash on I-20 at mile marker 12 blocks lanes. Injuries from this accident were reported.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), most accidents tend to occur between 3 pm and 6 pm.

We urge drivers to take extra precautions when traveling down busy interstates, especially when there is construction or motorists on the shoulder. By remaining alert and aware behind the wheel, drivers can take notice of advanced signage about lane closures or changes in the flow of traffic.
